Ex Tempo is a series dedicated to the creation and promotion of contemporary, indeterminate, and improvised music. Each edition is directed by a different guest artist or group, who conceives the program, serves as its curator, and assembles the performers. Some editions premiere original works; others are devoted to the interpretation of existing repertoire or depart from a concept proposed by the guest.

Created in 2024, Ex Tempo has produced 13 events — twelve in Rio de Janeiro and one in Berlin — featuring 38 artists from Germany, Argentina, Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Denmark, Italy, Lithuania, Portugal, and Russia. Highlights include the premieres of the suites “Só Ideia Torta” by Lee Hodel and “DiFeReNçA oU rEpEtIçÃo” by Pedro Albuquerque, the “Koellreutter 110” edition, directed by Sérgio Villafranca in homage to the composer Hans-Joachim Koellreutter, and the Ex Tempo – Symbiophilia edition in Berlin, directed by the Panthalassa Ensemble.

The series is produced by GRF Cultural, in collaboration with the Free At Last Collective. The first three editions were held in partnership with the Assoc. Cult. Springtime Jazz Festival (IT), within the framework of ICR-International Creative Residences, with the support of the Lithuanian Council for Culture (LT). The 12th edition was produced in Berlin, with the support of the Goethe-Institut, within the framework of the Symbiophilia project, supported by the same institution’s International Coproduction Fund.
